In residency on Dragonland
This month finds me in Salta, Argentina, beginning an artist residency at Finca San Jose de la Viña, the home and mountain ranch (informally known as Dragonland) of my dear friend Marianna Lopez. I’ve just arrived and am taking a couple of days to recover from travel and adjust to altitude before beginning my work.
During this residency, I plan to deepen a practice that has been a source of consistent guidance: connect to the earth and tune in, beyond what can be perceived with the five senses, to communications from the land. My hope is to spend as much time out of doors as possible. And incorporate natural materials from the land directly into my work, which is a completely new exploration.
I do expect this experiment to be challenging. Doubts always emerge when I find myself outside the borders of what I already know—who knows, maybe I’ll begin using a Litany against Fear (where are my Dune fans?).
While this land is wild and fierce, I sense that she is also generous. That she will be communicative, that transmissions will flow easily. The outcome is uncertain, but I know I can trust my process. I’m curious to see what comes.
Until soon!
Research Day
A few weeks back, before beginning my trip, I visited the library at the Rubell Museum Miami to do some research on the artist Nancy Graves. Her body of work is diverse, spanning sculpture, film, and painting (interestingly, she incorporated scientific data like lunar and ocean topography maps into some of her paintings). The collection of resources in the museum’s library is extensive—highly recommend if you are in need of inspiration or information.
