Hibernation currently unavailable
This this is the time of year when the days grow shorter, the daylight is less and less, and we crave comfort and cozy-ness. Nature begins to fold in on itself for the winter (death, decomposing, resting) season. There is perhaps some wisdom in letting our bodies and our schedules follow suit—as the year grows old, trying to wind down our obligations, commit to fewer things, take extra time for rest. Many of my more intuitive friends suggest this approach, and I’d be lying if I said that hibernation didn’t sound really, really good about now.
However. ‘Tis the season of the busiest period in the Miami arts community. Long days, late nights, plenty of pressure, short on time, always one more thing. I’m taking care of myself in the midst of all this by staying hydrated and eating well, taking my vitamins, getting exercise, making space for meditation and similar practices. It’s definitely not hibernation, but it goes a long way towards sustaining me.
If you’ve been following my journey for a little while, you’ll know that I participate in Miami Art Week and this year is no exception. Below, you’ll find details on where I’m showing and how to join.
But one more thought here, reflecting on winter: it seems that for everyone, this time of year is hectic and challenging. Have you felt this tension between the imposed busy-ness of the season, and the natural inclinations of the body, the animal undergirding of our human flesh? Have you relented to the pull towards rest, comfort, quiet? or do you push it aside? To me it feels like we are running counter to nature when we accelerate through the last days of the year. Is there any practical antidote?
Invitation: Féria Clandestina
Art Week 2024 finds me returning to exhibit with Féria Clandestina (aka clandestine fair), this time with a solo presentation in Booth 205. Held at the Gold Dust Motel at 7700 Biscayne, Clandestina will present 29 Exhibitor Rooms and five Special Projects showcasing 93 local, national, and international artists.
I’ll exhibit paintings and mixed-media pieces from my Glyph-State series, which visualizes experiences of being guided by subtle wisdom: messages received via intuition, the body, dreams, omens, and synchronicities. Murmurs from this inherent communications frequency are shown as deconstructed, vaguely familiar symbols. Fragmented and interwoven, the glyphs suggest that intuitive knowledge, while sometimes enigmatic, may be accessed with intentional practice, or received with an unexpected jolt.
In addition to the visual artwork, I have created an interactive component for this presentation, a sort of low-tech “machine” which will allow visitors to receive a unique communication of their own.

P.s. for those of you (understandably) intimidated by or allergic to the Basel traffic apocalypse, just know that this fair is located in the MiMo / Upper Eastside neighborhood: aka, very far away from the insanity of South Beach.
Miami Individual Artist Grant
I am so grateful to be a recipient of the 2024-2025 Miami-Dade Individual Artist (MIA) Grant by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, with the support of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Cultural Affairs Council.
This support will enable me to continue developing a line of work that has been percolating over the last year, which I think of as listening deeply to the Earth and bringing a project to life in response. I started this process during an artist residency in Salta, Argentina, where I created sculptures with cattle bones; and in Tennessee, USA, where I harvested wild clay (more on this soon!). I intend to initiate a similar Earth Listening project in South Florida in the coming year.
