Cycles
It’s application season (grants, residencies, shows, etc) so there’s been a good deal of photography, thinking, writing, figuring out how to frame what I do and the artwork I’m making in terms of what a given organization looks for in an artist. Building an application is a good exercise: it is an opportunity to create fluency around your practice, to develop more ways of articulating your vision—a new angle on the work you’re already doing. I am often somewhat exhilarated after submitting an application; providing all this “proof” to an outside entity usually has the effect of making me feel more legit than I do on a regular day.
And then, I move on to the next one. Weeks or months will pass before I hear anything. When I get that email, there’s usually some variation on “unfortunately, you were not selected” verbiage—being an artist involves so much rejection. But then again, I get just enough acceptance letters to keep me motivated to start the process all over again. Poco a poquito, as they say.
In other news, I’m settling into a new studio—a bright room in an artist-run bungalow. This space feels expansive and full of possibility. I’m able to work outdoors here, too; there’s space for clay and wood work in the backyard. I’m happy to arrange studio visits for those of you who are local and would like to drop by.
Despite what the above picture suggests (I’d just moved in), the studio is packed full of artwork right now; this weekend it will be nearly empty as most of the work heads to a show that opens next week. I think this will create a feeling of a vacuum, a metaphorical blank canvas that invites new creation and experiments. I’m excited for that open space.
Mother Tongue—opening Monday, March 3rd
I was selected by collaboARTive as the artist-in-residence at the InterContinental Miami for the month of March. The show, Mother Tongue, is a selection of pieces from my Glyph-State series, and while the show will be on view for the entire month, there are special activations happening each Monday evening. From panel conversations to a participatory mark-making workshop, I’d love for you to drop by and learn more about my process and inspiration.
