This, fall I became a resident artist at Gasper Arts Center in Dania Beach. Having a larger, more flexible studio space has given me room to experiment with different materials, techniques, etc.
For the last few months, I have been hidden away in the depths of the studio so to speak, not doing much engagement or communication. Sometimes this has felt good; offering extended focus, deep exploration; at other times it’s felt intense, and uncomfortably disconnected from time and “real life.” That said, looking back over the past months, it’s clear to me that my practice has grown significantly.
Some of this growth and expansion may be due to working in a new medium. Over the summer, I took an oil painting course at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I had never worked in oil, and imagined it would be difficult; but actually I have loved the process, the feeling, all the possibilities and even the learning curve. Working in a new medium has required me to slow down, study, take a very experimental approach, and embrace mistakes and “failures.” This, in turn, has been liberating, bringing a feeling of openness and freedom to my process.
One of my favorite aspects of studying at the Art Institute was having access to the Museum and taking inspiration from works in their collection. It was a delight to be able to pop into the museum for 15-20 minutes to look at something specific, then head back to the painting studio. There were a few pieces in particular that spoke to me… works by artists like Man Ray, Lee Mullican, Remedios Varo, Picasso; and, last but not least, some artifacts from the museum’s Egyptian collection (some favorite images included at the bottom of this newsletter).
Immersing myself in study, new materials, and a larger workspace brought focus to a series I began earlier in the year, the Glyph-State series. Over the last several months, my sketchbook and studio have been filling up with experiments in honing my glyphs into specific forms and patterns.
With that said, I’m happy to note that I’ll be showing two large scale studies / experimental pieces from this series on Saturday, November 18th at Gasper Art Center’s Artist in Residency show. Would love to see you there—full details below.
